Welcome To Donny The DJ's Turd Polishing Page

I must have been just a little (or a lot) drunk or high or both when I took on the project of redoing this 79 Chevy Van.Those of you that have customized your vans know how tough it is to stop once you start. This piggy really got out of control.I started with a 1979 Chevy 125" Wb 1/2 Ton cargo Van with a 305 V8 that had only one owner.Unfortunately, that one owner had some strange ideas on customizing and vehicle maintenance.....................

Yep,Don't know what I was thinking when I bought this turd....

Check out the missing headlight doors, broken grille, and "genuwine" FoMoCo antique mirrors. Not to mention the "low profile" antenna....

Yes sir,I musta got lost when I bought this...

The van had a least 20 coats of what appeared to be black house paint liberally and sloppily applied with a broom or snow brush.......

"Sears easy livin' paint, for Great American Vans like yours......"

2 gallons of aircraft stripper, hours and hours of DA'ing and several beers later....

I kinda liked the railroad tie bumper (long since replaced)...good for scaring the crap out of drivers of small cars..

After most of the work was done, occurred to me to remove the bumpers.

Much prettier in primer...

At this point had spent so much time on it I was considering leaving it in primer....

Primed ,with chip guard on lower panels...

Yes,the beers interact with the photography, this is the base coat w/out the clear

Here we are, painted, ready to apply the silly stripe I designed in a stupor that made an endless labor of love (or insanity) look like a conversion van instead of a custom....

Installed an entire new exhaust from the header pipes on back and noticed this awful noise......

Here's my brother,Animal, from Salt City Vans, staring at the new engine we had to install to replace the one with the rod knock.Always fun to do with a freshly painted vehicle..

Me,Leaving work early from my assist.body shop managers job to go to Spring Thaw ,It's first run......

Head of Honda detail shop(It's first bath),Me, and Manny, salesman, long time vanner, still haven't left for Thaw....

And Finally......

Gee, and all it took to do this job besides body materials and hundreds of hours of work, was a chrome front and a rear step bumper w/frame hitch, 1 ton suspension, front and rear, mirrors, visor, roof rack and ladder, rear window louvers, pop out slider windows, side opera windows, roof vent w/fan,running boards, seats, overhead console, and many interior mods which will be covered when I get enough ambition to scan the pics,hehe.305 V8 #2 was a under powered pig, wouldn't pull hills the way I thought it should,a necessity with all the Pa. runs we go to. So,when my buddy was getting his divorce and his soon to be ex wife started making ugly noises about selling his 350/300 hp V8 he had built to go into his "35" Coupe a deal was quickly made. With a Weiland Hirise and a Holley 650 it pulls hills, now.

7 years later,Ohio...

Ready to be done, again, getting some scruffies that could get worse, bought another Chevy Van to drive so I can give my undivided attention to this one........AGAIN!!
